Negotiations Workshop with Dr. Nazli Bhatia

3:00- 4:00 PM

Dr. Nazli Bhatia is a senior research fellow at the Psychology Department and a lecturer at the Wharton School at University of Pennsylvania. The overarching goal of her research is to better understand the powerful role words can play in a variety of interpersonal contexts. The main domain she explores this question is negotiation, where she studies rhetorical strategies, that is, the different ways in which proposals, offers and concessions can be presented to influence the negotiation process and outcome.

Though past research has mostly treated the bargaining process as an exchange of numbers, Dr. Bhatia's work finds that the way in which offers are communicated critically influence interpersonal and economic outcomes in negotiation. In a related and more recent line of research, she explores the divergent effects of the same communication strategies when enacted by women as opposed to men. She examines this question as it relates to assertive bargaining strategies as well as the provision of apologies in organizational life.

Currently at Penn, Dr. Bhatia teaches two different courses on negotiation at the undergraduate and master’s levels in addition to a course on power and influence. In the past, she has taught organizational behavior, cross-cultural management and managing teams at the undergraduate, master’s, MBA and executive levels.

Dr. Bhatia received her PhD in Organizational Behavior and Theory at the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University in 2014. Prior to her appointment at Penn, she worked as an assistant professor in Portugal and in Qatar, thus having had the pleasure of teaching a diverse array of students.
